Retrain Your Taste Buds

Have you ever thought about being healthy, then go Nah! Or have you started but gave in because of temptations due to your surroundings. Does eating healthy mean giving up all those tasty favorite dishes that you love? It doesn’t have to be. The goal is not to deprive yourself, it’s about doing the things that you love but in a healthier way. You are so used to eating certain foods as it is a reflection of your upbringing. Have you ever stopped to think about what would your cravings look like if you were brought up in a different culture, or a different household?

They say it takes 21 days to create a habit, is this still applicable even when you’re trying to break out of several habits of a life time? I know that changing your eating habits sounds like a daunting mission that will last forever. The truth is that it doesn’t happen overnight, it happens over time. What length of time you might ask? Humans have 2,000 to 10,000 taste bud cells. About 50 to 100 of those cells are replaced every two weeks or so. This means that even if you have a lifetime of bad habits you can still make a 360 degree change and develop new habits. A small sacrifice, can potentially bring you the power to gain interest in healthier, non-processed fresh foods.

Ever start off with one cookie, shortly to realize you’ve had the whole pack. Your cravings are actually not related to taste. Neurotransmitters release hormones to stimulate the pleasure centers of your brain when you eat your favorite junk foods. This is what causes your cravings! All of these cravings for foods high in fat do not allow your body to communicate to your mind…enough! The body is full. Instead you continue to eat with no awareness because it is lacking the nutrients that you should be receiving from REAL foods.

When we eat processed genetically modified foods all the time, our taste buds forget how real foods actually taste. This may be the reason why we think that whole foods do not taste good. Your taste buds categorize taste in 4 categories… bitter, sour, salty, & sweet. To retrain your taste buds here are some simple substitutes to get you started…

Bitter-> Switch up your morning acidic beverage, Coffee! Instead have Luke warm water with lemon to cleanse your body and break the acidity that the body produces overnight.

Sour-> Throw away the sour cream & onion chips and pick up green apples for a sourly taste.

Salty-> Ditch the Table salt and pick up sea salt which comes straight from the Earth.

Sweet-> You can’t have your Tea or coffee without the sweet of sugar. Instead, use stevia or other sweetener’s that nature has given us to cut back on wanting the artificial stuff!

If you cut down on eating foods that are high in synthetic ingredients you can literally retrain your taste buds to appreciate the taste of real wholesome foods. Doing so doesn’t mean that you’re journey needs to come to a full stop. It’s about replacing the things that you love, but in turn robs you of your health. It should be a two-way street, where you love your food and in return it nourishes, protects and fills you.

Go in your refrigerator or covert and identify your favorite foods that you feel you could never stop eating. Read the ingredients!  If your favorite snack isn’t made up of real foods but instead made up of big words that the majority of us do not understand then I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, there’s is a reason you can’t stop. Do you repeatedly have the desire to stop consuming something but are unable to? This behavior will never take place with a fruit or veggies (Unless your pregnant). This addictive behavior is most commonly found in processed foods.

Becoming ingredients savvy is your first step! Read my blog deviant ingredients to learn more. It’s simple! Avoid chemicals that are designed to keep you wanting more, if you can’t say it don’t eat it!

Please comment if you are willing to take a 10 day challenge to retrain your taste buds?!

  1. Good question. If i was brought up in a different healthier household I probably wouldn’t crave soda the way that I do and hate healthy foods the way that I do. I struggle with finding healthy dupes to my unhealthy habits. Well thanks to you lol I found a yummy dupe to chicken wings, yum!
